Mabalel is named after a poem by the legendary South African polymath Eugene Marais, which tells the story of a local chieftain’s daughter of the same name who was ambushed while fetching water from the Limpopo river by the crocodile, Lalele. The vineyard is planted on ‘Kaaimansgat’ farm – meaning Crocodile’s lair – and a river flows past the vineyard. The site is 700m high and surrounded by dramatic mountains, with peaks that are are often snow-capped in winter.

A savoury and brooding vintage, the nose showing star anise, mushroom, soy and rose. Density of fruit on the palate from damson, redcurrant and plum, as well as an earthiness and depth from rhubarb, tomato leaf and molasses. The finish is dry with a lightly spicy grip.

Crystallum, Mabalel Pinot Noir 2018
Transparent, pure, with tension from high-altitude Elandskloof origin. 2018 slow to unfold from initial intense freshness; succulent black & red cherry supported by gentle yet effective tannins. Both elegance & substance. 10% wholebunch, vs just 5% for 2017, 20% new oak. – Platter’s Guide, 5* (95/100)

 Crystallum Mabalel Pinot Noir 2021
Grapes from Elandskloof, no whole-bunch fermentation. Some smoky reduction before red and black cherry, ripe orange, violets, a slight herbal note and white pepper. The palate is rich and round – good fruit expression, well integrated acidity and very fine tannins. A sumptuous wine with a creamy texture. - CE’s rating: 94/100.

The yields were the lowest ever - one third of the average - from this Elandskloof vineyard in 2019, but there's nothing wrong with the quality and no sign of over-concentration on the nose or palate. Dark, intense and vigorous, with floral top notes, impressive structure, some sweet spices from 20% new wood and the raciness that's typical of the site. Consistently impressive. Drink 2022-27. - Tim Atkin (TA) : 95 Points (2019)
