Nicolas Potel Echezeaux, 2006

Tiny quantities of purchased fruit and juice from four sources combine for the Potel 2006 Echezeaux. Tart, bright suggestions of red raspberry, choke cherry, and rhubarb contrast with hints of vanilla, brown spices, and star anise. The invigoratingly tart fruit here does not preclude a sense of creaminess, a feature of so many 2006s that appears to be largely absent this year chez Potel. A satisfyingly meaty undertow lends some depth, and this finishes with admirable if not terribly complex length. Given its sense of energy and its fine-grained tannins, I imagine this will fare well for a half dozen years.
