Located in the southern portion of the Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet is where white wine reigns supreme and where many wine geeks - both drinkers and professionals say is the purest expression of Chardonnay in the world.
For exceptional quality, seek out labels that bear the name of any one of the three Grand Cru vineyard designations: Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet (both Grand Cru vineyard sites are situated partly in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet and in the neighboring village of Puligny-Montrachet) or Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, which is abuts Bâtard-Montrachet to the north and is wholly planted the village of Chassagne-Montrachet--it also proudly can boast of being the smallest Grand Cru vineyard in all of Burgundy). Wines can also be found at the village level and Premier Cru level.
Regardless of the hierarchy of quality in Burgundy, whether you’re drinking a top-tier Grand Cru wine, a next-level Premier Cru wine or the lesser village level wines (a wine that is produced from grapes that might be sourced from anywhere in the village), with Chassagne-Montrachet, you are undoubtedly drinking a world-class wine.
And what might you expect in the glass and on the palate from these storied wines? On the palate they are steely and powerful, offering aromas of succulent white flowers, nuts, and impeccable mineral notes. Prices will range from affordable at the village level, to pricey Premier Cru wines and “break-the-bank” expensive Grands Crus.
